  • Overview

PPA recognizes the following:

  • The safety of our players, members, and staff is a top priority

  • Extreme weather conditions can pose a threat to the safety of our players, coaches, and game officials

  • Poor field conditions can pose a threat to the safety of our players, coaches, and game officials

In the event of extreme weather, the anticipation of such, or poor and dangerous field conditions, PPA programs will be cancelled as decided by:

  1. The owner(s) of the facility in use (County, School, or Other)

  2. PPA’s Director of Administration

  3. Officials present at events and/or games

  4. The Coach of the practice

In the event of a cancellation, all parents, players, and coaches will be notified of the decision via email as soon as the decision is made.

Below are some Guidelines for dealing with the weather:

  • Cold Weather

PPA looks at the “feels like” temperature when evaluating conditions, as things like Wind Chill and Humidity can play a large factor in Cold Weather Play. Players are more susceptible to injury in cold weather, particularly muscular injury.

< 50°F - PPA recommends wearing extra protections and layered clothing:

  • Long Sleeve Shirts

  • Long Athletic Pants

  • Extra Socks

  • Gloves

  • Caps

  • Any Jackets and Sweatshirts (non-hooded) must be worn underneath Jerseys as to make the player’s number visible

  • Hooded Sweatshirts, Scarves, or any other loose clothing is prohibited as they create a potential hazard to the player

< 20°F - PPA will cancel outdoor practices and games for anything that feels like 20° or lower

  • Hot Weather

Playing in Hot Weather increases the chance players can experience Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke, Cramps, and many other issues. While these are serious risks, they are also preventable through proper preparation. It is up to parents and coaches to make sure their players are taking in the appropriate precautions, drinking the right amount of liquids not just on practice and game days, but especially on the days leading up to practices and games.

> 90 Heat Index - PPA will enforce mandatory breaks in play:

  • At least one break per half for all games

  • Water Breaks every 15-20 minutes during practices

> 105 Heat Index - PPA will enforce enforce mandatory breaks in play:

  • At least two breaks per half for games for games exceeding 60-minutes in length

  • Water Breaks every 15 minutes during practices

> 120 Heat Index - PPA will cancel Practices and Games:

  • Above 120 on the Heat Index conditions can be categorized under “Extreme Danger,” in cases of extreme risks to our players PPA will cancel programs

  • Rain and Snow

Rainy or snowy conditions can drastically affect field conditions, posing a risk to players, coaches, and game officials. Prior to practices and games, officials will monitor field conditions as well as potential risks to field conditions to determine if fields are “playable.” If they are deemed “not playable,” all practices/games at that location will be cancelled until conditions improve.

  • Lightning

Activities will be postponed whenever lightning is within a distance of 10 miles. Any time there is under 30 seconds between a lightning strike and the sound of thunder there should be an immediate stoppage of play and an evacuation of the pitch and sidelines in search of shelter.

Activities are to be postponed 30 minutes after every lightning strike within 10 miles and will not resume until there is a full 30 minutes has passed without a strike in the area.

PPA tries to schedule time at the end of seasons for make ups, however, we are beholden to our Field and Facility Permits, as well as the changing of the Seasons. We try out best to accommodate if there are any cancelations, but we cannot guarantee any make ups. After the end of the season no more make ups will be scheduled.
